Environmental Impact

Emirates Aviation University (EAU) is the education arm of the Emirates Group.  The Environment Affairs Department of Emirates Group is responsible for coordinating and reporting on environmental initiatives across the Group. Within the Group, we are involved in a wide range of activities such as Group-wide recycling programmes, and we work with many other departments to identify opportunities to improve our environmental performance.

Emirates Aviation University is bound by the Emirates Group Environmental Policy which recognises that environmental responsibility is core to our long-term business success.  We are committed to minimising the environmental impact of our operations and we aim to meet the needs of our customers while using energy and resources efficiently, minimising waste, and operating our assets in the most environmentally responsible manner.

As part of its commitment to energy conservation, the Emirates Group has installed 2,990 solar photovoltaic panels in the Engine Maintenance Centre.  This is expected to generate in excess of 1,800 megawatt-hours of electricity and save around 800 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.  We’ve also been installing light emitting diode (LED) lights across the Group, saving large amounts of electricity.  They also have the added advantage of being much cooler than the lights they replaced, saving on air conditioning.   .

EAU has installed a VRF air-conditioning system which is one of the most efficient systems currently available.  As part of our water saving programme, EAU has fitted water saving nozzles on all wash basin taps to reduce the wastage of water by reducing the flow rate from 10 l/m to 0.5 l/m.  We also have reduced our water consumption by installing low flow toilets with 500ml bottles inside each tank.

Low water demand plants are selected for our landscaping which require little or no irrigation and we have installed an automatic irrigation system to reduce our water consumption.

Emirates Group is constantly on the lookout for opportunities to reduce resource consumption, repurpose items, and recycle materials when they reach the end of their life – all essential aspects of a circular economy.

The Information Technology department implemented a ‘Think Before You Print’ campaign, which achieved a 33 percent drop in print volumes in just eight months, saving millions of sheets of paper and over 2 million kWh of electricity.

Emirates Flight Catering provides the on campus catering at Emirates Aviation University.  They run a recycling programme which diverts a wide range of materials from landfill, including paper and cardboard, aluminium foil and cans, and plastic bottles and containers.  Emirates Flight Catering also supports the Emirates Environmental Group’s aluminium can drives – donating thousands of kilograms of cans a year. 

The University is committed to Waste Reduction and we are continuously expanding recycling services to increase waste reduction capacities on campus.  As part of our commitment to recycling, Bee’ah provide a number of recycling facilities across the Emirates Group for papers, newspapers, aluminium, metal, plastic cans and bottles.

Emirates Group provide transport services for both students and staff.  The vehicle fleet managers are focused on minimising the environmental footprint of our road operations. The Transport Services department have introduced more fuel efficient vehicles, optimised trip planning to reduce the number of routes served and number of empty trips, and trained drivers on safe and efficient driving practices, including avoidance of unnecessary engine idling. Their efforts have seen them receive several awards for sustainable transport in Dubai.

Students and staff who do not wish to use Emirates Transport are encouraged to car pool.  The large number of staff living in Emirates Group provided accommodation enhances the ease of, and potential for, car-pooling.
